Michelle's Recovery After A Car Accident

When Michelle arrived at Cornerstone Hospital, she was reliant on a ventilator. After working with her interdisciplinary care team, she was able to discharge to an Acute Rehabilitation Facility.

Michelle survived a motor vehicle collision, where she suffered significant abdominal injuries. She also had acute respiratory failure due to a left collapsed lung. These injuries required intubation (insertion of a breathing tube), surgical removal of parts of her bowels and colon, and removal of her spleen and a kidney. She needed IV antibiotics due to peritonitis, and was also put in skeletal traction and had a dislocated hip and lower extremity repaired.

Multiple teams helped in Michelle’s care at Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Little Rock, including pulmonary, gastrointerology, nephrology, infectious disease, and orthopedics. They helped her with vent weaning, IV antibiotics, wound care, Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) management, and progression to a feeding tube. After being weaned off the vent, she had to regain strength and range of motion. With the help of Cornerstone’s teams, she was discharged to an acute rehabilitation provider, where she has progressed to tolerating three hours of therapy per day.

“All the glory to God! It’s a miracle that I’m still alive. Thankful for my family and Cornerstone! I’m going to miss Ashley and Jasmine. When Ashley would come into my room every day all of my stress would go away. I have had amazing nurses and CNAs.”

Michelle can’t wait to get back home, where she is a full-time grandma and involved in her community church.
