Hospitalized after severe confusion and a two-week-long headache, Joey was found to have a serious infection.
AT ADMISSION
Joey was found to have cryptococcal meningitis (a fungal infection around the brain and spinal cord), acute infectious encephalopathy (brain dysfunction caused by infection) and acute hypoxic respiratory failure. He needed highflow nasal oxygen and complex antimicrobial therapy. His treatment was also complicated by low potassium, severe protein malnutrition, agitation, and sundowning (worsening confusion later in the day).
TREATMENT AT CORNERSTONE
After transferring to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Little Rock, Joey received dietary management, IV antibiotics, daily lab monitoring, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy. He regained strength, completed his IV antibiotics, and met his dietary needs. He and his wife praised Cornerstone’s support staff, including CNAs Gloria and Lynette, rehab staff, and nurses.
OUTCOME
After 26 days at Cornerstone, Joey was discharged to a skilled nursing facility. He and his wife looked forward to the next step in healing, with the goal of returning home and getting back to family, work, hobbies, and daily life.
