Benjamin's Recovery from Heart Attack and Respiratory Failure
When Benjamin arrived at Cornerstone Specialty Hospital, he was reliant on a ventilator and had multiple health issues. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to an Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility.
A Patient Success Story From Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Conroe
Benjamin was an active, hard-working man when he arrived at a shortterm acute care hospital with shortness of breath and chest pain. He suffered a cardiac arrest, and his condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to respiratory failure that required mechanical ventilation and placement of a tracheostomy. He spent the next three weeks on a ventilator, confined to bed as his body fought to recover.
When Benjamin was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Conroe, he remained ventilator-dependent and was profoundly weak. He was completely dependent for all mobility and required maximum assistance from two therapists just to sit at the edge of the bed.
But over the next five weeks, Benjamin embraced every opportunity to improve. With the support of an interdisciplinary team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, nurses, and physicians, he participated in intensive rehabilitation while safely weaning from the ventilator. By the time of discharge, Benjamin had been successfully decannulated and no longer required supplemental oxygen. He regained the ability to transfer independently, walk more than 80 feet with a walker, and feed and dress himself with only minimal assistance.
“The care was great, and the workers truly care about me. They really know how to help people who are really sick like I was.”
Benjamin transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery, setting a goal of returning home and getting back to the hobbies he loves most—making music and cooking. The team at Cornerstone Conroe is honored to have been part of Benjamin’s recovery journey.
