Sally's Success Story
"The Cornerstone team provided top-notch medical care, helping me survive a serious critical illness. Their care, attention and encouragement saved my life and lifted my spirits daily!" Sally was diagnosed with respiratory failure and flu B, requiring high-flow oxygen and antibiotics. At Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals, her respiratory function improved and she became more independent.
Sally was fully independent and actively helping manage a local construction association when she began experiencing worsening shortness of breath and a persistent cough. She sought care at her local hospital, where she was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure. Further evaluation revealed a lung infection and a positive test for Influenza B. Her condition continued to decline, and she was admitted to the ICU, where she received high-flow oxygen and antibiotics to treat the infection.
After 10 days in the ICU, Sally’s condition stabilized enough for her to be transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital in Broken Arrow for continued care and recovery. Unfortunately, soon after her arrival, her breathing difficulties worsened, requiring her to be placed on a ventilator to support her respiration. During this time, she was sedated and completely dependent on hospital staff for mobility and care.
Thankfully, Sally remained on the ventilator for only six days before she was able to breathe on her own again with supplemental oxygen via nasal cannula. Once off the ventilator, she began making rapid progress. Her respiratory function improved significantly, and she steadily regained her mobility and independence in daily activities such as eating, bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
In just over two weeks of working with the dedicated Cornerstone Broken Arrow team, including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, a dietitian, and the rehabilitation staff, Sally made a full turnaround. By the time of discharge, she had completely weaned off oxygen, was eating and drinking a regular diet, and was independently completing all her daily activities. She could also transfer in and out of bed without assistance and walk over 500 feet with only standby support for safety, without the use of any assistive device.
Way to go, Sally! You exceeded everyone’s expectations, and we’re honored to have been a part of your incredible recovery journey.
