James' Success Story

Cornerstone Specialty Hospital Muskogee patient James stands with his care team

Following surgical complications, James developed respiratory failure requiring a ventilator and a feeding tube.  He was discharged to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital to begin his rehabilitation.  After having his feeding tube removed, and making remarkable gains in mobility, James was discharged home with home health services.

Before his illness, James was independent and working full-time. His health began to decline when he experienced increasing abdominal pain, which was found to be a re-emergence of a previously repaired hernia. He was admitted to his local hospital for surgery, but complications arose after the repair. James required multiple surgeries on his intestines, and he developed respiratory failure that required a ventilator. He was admitted to the ICU, where he was eventually weaned off the ventilator, but he also needed a feeding tube since he could not safely eat or drink by mouth.

When medically stable, James was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Muskogee. At that time, he required one to two staff members to help him move from his bed to a chair and needed assistance with all daily activities, including bathing and dressing. He also still needed a feeding tube.

Over the course of nearly two months, James worked diligently with his physicians, nurses, and the rehabilitation team. His progress was remarkable. By the time of discharge, he was able to transfer independently, walk more than 70 feet with a rolling walker and only standby assistance, and complete most of his daily activities with minimal help. Most importantly, he regained the ability to eat and drink by mouth again.

Thanks to his determination and the support of his care team, James made incredible gains during his stay. He was discharged home with home health services to continue building strength, increasing endurance, and moving closer to full independence.

Way to go, James!

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
