Brian's Success Story

Cornerstone Specialty Hospital Broken Arrow patient Brian shares his story of successful recovery

After a serious motorcycle accident, Brian was life-flighted to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, requiring the removal of part of his skull.  He was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital where he received physical, occupational, and speech therapy.  He was weaned off supplemental oxygen, regained mobility, and the ability to eat.

Brian was a thriving, independent individual until a tragic motorcycle accident changed everything. When emergency crews arrived, he was in cardiac arrest and struggling to breathe due to a collapsed lung. After receiving immediate medical intervention, he was life-flighted to the hospital for trauma surgery, where he faced severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury that required partial skull removal.

During a challenging three-week stay in the ICU, Brian underwent a tracheostomy and had a feeding tube placed, as he was unable to breathe or eat without assistance. Once stable, he was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital Broken Arrow, where the care team developed a comprehensive care plan tailored to his recovery needs, which included a specialized Traumatic Brain Injury program.

At Cornerstone, Brian worked intensively with a dedicated team of physical therapists (PT), occupational therapists (OT), and speech therapists. He engaged with various rehabilitation equipment, such as parallel bars, resistance bands, and mobility aids, to enhance his physical strength and coordination. The PT team focused on improving his mobility and balance through specific exercises that targeted his muscle strength. As part of his occupational therapy, Brian practiced Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including grooming, dressing, and meal prep, which were essential for his return to independence. He received hands-on training to adapt tasks to his capabilities, helping him build confidence and functionality in daily routines. Additionally, he utilized adaptive equipment to facilitate his progress.

After 21 days of diligent effort from the interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and rehab specialists, Brian was weaned off supplemental oxygen and started to regain mobility. He began moving with assistance and initiated eating trials with the speech therapist. After his stay, Brian returned to the main hospital for further procedures before transitioning to a neuro-rehabilitation facility, where he spent six additional months strengthening his abilities. Thanks to the foundational progress made at Cornerstone, including the pivotal role of PT, OT, and speech therapy, he was ultimately able to return home independently.

Brian and his wife visited Cornerstone to express their gratitude for the exceptional care he received, which played a crucial role in his recovery. From the entire care team at Cornerstone, we wish Brian all the success in his recovery.

Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
