Floyd's Recovery from Respiratory Failure
When Floyd arrived at Cornerstone Hospital, he was dealing with a great number of medical issues. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility.
Floyd went to a local hospital for acute respiratory acidosis (a life-threatening drop in blood pH levels), shortness of breath, and generalized weakness that had been getting worse over a few weeks. He has a history of acute COPD and congestive heart failure. At the hospital, he required progressive breathing assistance and was eventually intubated. His stay was complicated by acute kidney injury. He was given intravenous (IV) treatment for edema (excess fluid buildup), along with IV steroids, and IV antibiotics. He was then sent to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Little Rock.
While at Cornerstone, Floyd received help from an interdisciplinary team that included respiratory care, nutrition, occupational and physical therapy, and nephrology. All drips, IV antibiotics, and IV steroids were completed and discontinued.
"Listen to your doctor. Never stop exercising. Thank you to everyone here. You were all so great!"
Floyd has a strong support system of individuals who were actively involved in his care. By the time Floyd was discharged, he had progressed to eating solids and being able to walk 10 feet. His son was thrilled to see the many improvements his father made. Floyd was discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue increasing his strength, mobility, and range of motion.
